Preparing Items

It is our desire to provide the highest quality items to our shoppers for purchase. Please carefully consider the items you consign. Items in poor condition are not likely to sell and bringing them to the sale causes more work for you the consignor and can take up valuable floor space. ***WE ARE ALLOWING TAGGING GUNS THIS SALE!!***

  • Please bring only IN SEASON clothing items. If we find items that are for the wrong seasons, we will remove them from the racks to prevent overcrowding.

  • All clothing (sizes newborn to pre-teen or maternity) must be clean and in good condition, without stains, tears, or missing buttons. Please check your items carefully before bringing them to the sale. Clothing that fails to meet quality standards may be removed from the sale racks at our discretion. If YOU would not buy it for your children, please do not bring it. We want to offer the highest quality used items to our shoppers that we can.

  • Clothing should be sorted by size and gender prior to consignor drop off to facilitate proper placing on racks. All clothes must be placed on hangers to be put on racks for display, with the exception of shoes, socks, and accessories. Consignors must provide their own hangers. MOPS does not store hangers between sales.

  • Pants and jeans should be attached to hangers using safety pins only (absolutely no straight pins). It works best to put the safety pins on the part of the hanger that forms the triangle so that pants hang down without sliding around.

  • Tags should be placed on the left shoulder or side (looking at the garment, the tag will be on the right) so that they are easy to see. It is MANDATORY to use either a hole punch, or a tagging gun on the upper left side of the tag to attach the tag to clothing using a safety pin. Removing pins from tags with no holes is a nightmare for our taggers and slows down the check-out process!

  • Layette items (such as blankets) are displayed on tables. Socks and small accessories should be placed in clean plastic zipper bags to be displayed on a table. Safety pin the tag to the outside of the bag so that it can be read easily.

  • You should TEST all DVDs and CDs to make sure that they still play correctly and are not overly scratched. Please also check for missing pieces in puzzles and other sets (especially building sets and board games) and if there are missing pieces, please note this on the tag....and price accordingly.

  • Toys, play equipment, and baby equipment should be wiped down so that they are clean. All items should be in good, usable condition. Small pieces that are not contained in the toy or its box should be put in clean plastic zipper bags and attached to toy with tape or rubber bands. Fabrics on car seats, strollers, and exersaucers should be washed and stains removed as much as possible.

  • All items are subject to inspection by volunteers. Items that do not meet these standards will be pulled from the floor and not put up for sale.

Attaching Tags to Clothing

Tags should be attached to clothing by safety pins ONLY (no straight pins, tape, stickers, or staples) through a hole-punched hole in the tag. We will be accepting clothing with tags attached with a tag gun. Make sure the safety pin goes through the hole in the tag. Punch the hole at least a quarter inch into the card so that the hole does not rip. Tags may be safety pinned to the outside of plastic baggies for items such as t-shirts, layette, socks, bows, etc. If using a tagging gun, be sure to put it through a seam so that the clothing will not be damaged. Each item should only have one tag. If an outfit has several pieces, just indicate this on the description section of the tag.

Attaching Tags to Toys and Equipment

Please use the same tags on clothing and non-clothing items. The same card stock and size requirements still apply to toys, equipment, and non-hanging items. Items with cloth (for example car seats, swings, strollers) can have their tags attached with safety pin through a hole punched in the tag just like the clothing items. Tags can be attached to hard items (for instance, a video, or plastic play equipment) with a rubber band, yarn or string. Thread the rubber band through the hole, then take one end and put it through the middle of the rubber band creating a loop. Place the loop over the toy. String works great on all oddly shaped items. Please use tape as a last resort- with one strip through the middle of the tag (across the description).

Please see the Items Not Accepted for Consignment list on the Consignor Corner page to ensure that all your items comply with our sale policies. Our sales floor space is limited and we hate to get rid of your items that are not accepted at our sale!

Pricing

The price should be written on the bottom of the tag. Large variations in pricing for certain items are to be expected. Please consider the condition of the item when pricing. Items in excellent condition will be priced about 1/3 to 1/2 of the original cost. Worn, marked material, or items missing pieces will sell for somewhat less. The chart below gives some general guidelines for the pricing of items. Things that are in excellent or unused condition or a larger size will be priced at the higher end of the price range. Designer brands might also be priced higher.

We divide tags in price increments when tallying them to prepare consignor payments. Any item over $1.00 should be priced in $.50 increments, and over $5.00 should be only in $1.00 increments. If you have lots of little items, we suggest putting several of them in a bag and pricing them at fifty cents or a dollar, rather than at $.25 each. If you put items in a baggie, please safety pin the tag to the outside of the baggie. Do not attach it to the front of the baggie with tape. This is greatly appreciated and makes the check-out process go much easier.

TAGS ARE IMPORTANT! We love GREAT TAGS!

It is important that all tags be easy to read, consistent in design, and that the information is in the correct area - as shown below. All day long people will be looking at the information on these tags, so please make sure they are done correctly. They also pass through many hands after they are removed from the item following purchase. Use legible handwriting or print them off on a computer. If you make a mistake on a tag, PLEASE make a new tag. If tags contain cross-outs, the cashiers may not assign the correct price. Tags without a price will be assigned a reasonable price so that the item may be sold.

Paper: Card stock only - no plain paper tags.

Size: Must be at least 2.5" X 3" (half an index card). It is not necessary to put a larger tag on a larger item, as they will be re-tagged. (The tag that you prepared will be placed onto a “Large Item Tag”.) If more room is needed to "advertise" an item, just use a blank tag (no price, no consignor number) for those comments.

Color and Design: Use any color index cards or card stock. In fact is it best if the cards are unique in some way. Do this by using a colorful pen to write the information, use a special font if printing on the computer, highlight the edges with a marker, or add a stamp. Be creative! Whatever you do, use the same color and design on each tag.

Hole punch: Tags for items of clothing MUST have one and only one hole-punch in the upper left hand corner, about 1/4 inch from the edge. The tag is attached to the clothing using a safety pin through this hole. This is easier to attach and easier to remove! We will not accept clothing with tags attached by a tag gun.

Consignor Number: Write consignor number on the TOP center of every tag. All tags without a consignor number will be considered a donation to CFC MOPS.

Description and size: In the middle of the tag, please write a description of the item. Include the size, gender, designer, color, and description of defect if any. If the tag falls off the item, the better the description, the easier it is to match it up with the item.

Half-Price Code: The half-price sale runs from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. A red “X” in the top right hand corner indicates that an item cannot be sold at half-price. If there is no “X” or there is a "1/2" written in the box, it will be sold at half-price.

Donation Code: Place a "D" in the lower right hand corner of the tag if you want your unsold items donated to charity. Items with a "D" will be cleared from the floor first. There will be no possibility to find donated items once they are taken off the racks. Items without a "D" will be consolidated for consignor Pick-up.

You may create your own tags, or you can download a tag template from this website. Should you not be able to download or print the tag template, please contact the Sale Coordinator at sale@cfcmops.com.

Tag Fee Policy

Correct tags are so important - shoppers look at them, taggers remove them, tag sorters and data entry process them!

Our policy concerning tags is as follows: For consignors that have tags that do not follow our guidelines, a minimum fine of $3.00 for up to the first 50 items sold will be deducted from the consignor payment. Should you sell more than 50 items, a fee of $0.03 for each additional tag will be deducted from your final payment. For example, if you sell a total of 150 items, you will be assessed the minimum fee of $3.00 plus $3.00 (100 X $0.03) for each tag above 50. Your total tag fee would be $6.00. This fee of $0.03 per tag will be multiplied by the total number of tags above 50 - NOT by the individual tags that are incorrect.

By and large, all of our consignors do a wonderful job of preparing tags, but we needed a more fair and consistent way to assess a fee for those tags that do not meet our guidelines. Rather than a flat fee, basing it on the number of tags that are incorrect or difficult to sort should serve as a fair solution. Tag guidelines include not only how tags are prepared, but also how they are attached to items.
