Friday Shifts

Rack Move

There are two Rack Move Shifts:

Friday 1:30 p.m. - 5:30 p.m.

Saturday 4:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m.

*Please note: New/longer shift times.

Rack move is the process of getting the racks from the storage unit at St. Theresa School to the location of the sale on the day prior to the sale and from the location of the sale to the storage unit on the day of the sale. These shifts are two separate shifts. The Friday shift will also be responsible for helping the set-up shift with grouping the racks in "kits" and bringing them into the area where they will be assembled. The Saturday Rack Move shift will assist in the clean-up process at the school and is responsible for taking apart the racks, moving them to the truck and delivering and unloading them at the storage unit. As with any other shift, your husband is welcome to serve your shift for you (highly recommend!)  - and you can shop the pre-sale! Because of the work involved during this shift, we do not recommend this shift for anyone who is pregnant.

This shift allows you to shop the pre sale, Friday night and also earns 75% back on  your sales (versus the standard 70%).

Set-Up

The Set-Up shift is Friday from 3:30 p.m. - 6:30 p.m.

A smooth and easy set-up always gets the sale off to a great start!

  • A Rack Move team will be arriving at the church the day before the sale at about 3:30 pm with the truck full of racks.

  • Help unload the racks and other items from the truck.

  • Help move all of the racks and equipment to the designated area.

  • Put racks together and arrange the racks, tables, and shelving units on the sales floor.

There is great deal of lifting and moving in this shift, so please be sure that you are ready for the task. We do not recommend this shift for pregnant volunteers. This is a great shift to send your husband in your place since there is a lot of lifting and moving. Please wear work clothes that can get dirty, as the storage place where the racks are kept is in the warehouse and is dusty. Work gloves are recommended.

This shift shops the pre-sale Saturday at 6:00 a.m.

Drop-Off

The Drop-Off shift is Friday from 5:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m.

The focus during the drop-off shift will be on helping consignors put out their items. Some volunteers will have specific areas of the sales floor.

These individuals will arrange items on racks and tables, continuously organizing and reorganizing the area as more items arrive. In addition, drop-off volunteers will also be watching the items for quality. Drop-off positions fill up rapidly. If you need a Friday night shift, sign up early! We will help you put out your items if  you are consigning.

Note: You may be asked to help finish setting up the racks.

This shift shops the pre-sale Saturday at 6:30 a.m.

Hospitality

This position is for those that cannot work a 3-hour shift, but would like the volunteer benefits of shopping the pre-sale and receiving 70% of the sales price for the consigned items sold. In exchange for providing specific hospitality items, the volunteer will earn full volunteer benefits. You will have to pay for and transport the items to the sale at the designated time. There is no reimbursement for what you purchase.

The financial outlay per hospitality volunteer will be approximately $30 (maybe slightly more, maybe slightly less). Approximately 2-3 weeks before the sale, you will receive a list of items to purchase (for example: cases of bottled water, soda, cookies, crackers) that are usually cheapest at Costco or Sam's Club but can be purchased wherever you choose. Please make sure to check in with the Sale Coordinator or Assistant Coordinator when dropping off your items on Friday so that we can ensure all assigned items are accounted for and you receive full credit for your shift.

This shift shops the pre-sale Saturday at 7:00 a.m.

Check-In

The Check-In Volunteers handle the checking in and out of Volunteers and Consignors during the drop-off on Friday, of Volunteers during the sale itself on Saturday, and of Consignors during pick-up on Saturday. Generally, you will be seated during this shift.

The available shifts are:

Friday 4:30 p.m. - 7:30 p.m. (6:45 a.m. Saturday pre-sale)

Friday 5:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. (6:45 a.m. Saturday pre-sale)

Saturday 8:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m. (6:45 a.m. Saturday pre-sale)

*Shops the 1/2 price sale Saturday from 11:00 a.m. - 11:30 a.m., after being released by shift leader.

Quality Control

The Quality Control shift is Friday from 5:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m.

Volunteers on the quality control team will be in charge of the following:

  • Merchandise is in good condition/quality.

  • Clothes are hung and tagged correctly using CFC MOPS tag guidelines.

  • Toys are visible and easily accessible tags.

  • Checking, retagging and moving (large items) to the sales floor.

  •  If you need a Friday night shift, sign up early!

Note: You may be asked to help finish setting up the racks.

This shift shops the pre-sale Saturday at 6:30 a.m.

Saturday Shifts
Cashier

There are two Cashier shifts on Saturday:

8:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m. (6:30 a.m. pre-sale)

11:00 a.m. - 2:30 p.m.* (6:30 a.m. pre-sale, 11:00 a.m. half-price sale)

The checkout process is a very important part of the sale and depends on the cashiers and taggers. The quicker the line moves, the more people can and will buy, and the more satisfied they will be with the sale. Cashiers and taggers work together as a team. The cashier will add up the tags and collect the payment (either cash or a check) from the customer. The cashier will then hand the customer a receipt, which will be checked by the Door Guard when they customer exits. After the completion of the transaction, the tags from the items are to be placed in the bucket provided.  This position is a good choice for individuals who are pregnant or for another reason would like to be fairly stationary during the shift.

*At 1:00 p.m., or whenever check-out from the Half-Price sale ends, volunteers that serve the 11:00 a.m. - 2:30 p.m. shift will report to Clean-Up Shift A to assist with preparation for Consignor Pick-Up.

Clean-Up

There are two overlapping Clean-Up shifts on Saturday:

Shift A: 12:30 p.m. - 3:30 p.m.

Shift B: 2:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m.

Clean-up is the process of returning the sale area back to its original state, and it is an important and much appreciated job. Volunteers during Shift A begin by sorting out donated items and organizing items for Consignor Pick-Up. Shift B volunteers will help finish the preparation for Consignor Pick-Up and organizing for the Dollar Dash. After the Dollar Dash, volunteers will be assigned to bagging and moving the leftover items to the Donations truck, breaking down racks and tables, taking down signs and cleaning out the school. As with any other shift, your husband is welcome to serve your shift for you - and you can shop the pre-sale! Because of the work involved during this shift, we do not recommend this shift for anyone who is pregnant.

This shift shops the pre-sale Saturday at 6:15 a.m. No time will be included in the shift to shop the Dollar Dash, so if you want to shop it, please work shift A and shop after your shift at 3:30 p.m.

Floor

There are two Floor shift times on Saturday:

8:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m. (6:45 a.m. Saturday pre-sale)

11:00 a.m. - 2:30 p.m.* (6:30 a.m. Saturday pre-sale, 11:00 a.m. half-price sale)

Certainly the most visible aspect of the sale is what happens on the sales floor on Saturday. Floor volunteers greatly impact the success of the sale! Make sure that clothing, toys, equipment, and all other merchandise remain in an orderly manner. Particularly watch for clothes that have fallen off the hangers. Match up missing tags as best possible with items or move tags to the Lost Tag Board. If your area is straight, check the hold bay or cashier area for items to put back. Some Floor volunteers will be monitoring the stage area where shoppers are allowed to sort through items for purchase. Getting items back on the racks that they do not wish to purchase will be of great importance. Floor volunteers will begin cleanup by organizing items within each area during the end of the second shift. In addition, be ready to assist customers in understanding the procedures of our sale, as they will come to you first with questions.

The 11:00 a.m. - 2:30 p.m. Floor Shift will also help with sorting items for consignor pick-up and the Dollar Dash starting at 1:00 p.m.

Hold Bay

The Hold Bay shift is Saturday

8:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m. (6:45 a.m. pre-sale)

11:30 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. (7:00 a.m. pre-sale, 11:00 a.m. half-price sale)

The Hold Bay is a place where shoppers can put their items while shopping and not have to carry around.  The Hold Bay volunteer will simply fill out a hold slip noting the time. The customer will receive a numbered clothespin, and another with a matching number will be attached to their items. When the customer returns, simply retrieve the clothespin, and give them their items. Specific instructions for this position will be given to you when you arrive for your shift.

Large Items Room

There are two Large Items Room shifts on Saturday:

8:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m. (6:45 a.m. pre-sale)

9:30 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. (6:45 a.m. pre-sale, 11:00 a.m. half-price sale)

Workers in the Large Items room will accept payment for, then tag and store large items while the purchaser continues to shop. Specific instructions for this position will be given to you when you arrive for your shift.

Tagger

There are two Tagger shifts on Saturday:

The tagger is responsible for removing tags from purchases. If the tag is damaged, write the missing information on the remaining part of the tag. It is very important that you not miss tags. Consignors will not be paid if the tag is not retained, so please do not sacrifice thoroughness for haste. While the cashier accepts payment, the tagger will gather up the items and put them in bags. The cashier will then hand the customer a receipt. After the completion of the transaction, the tags are to be placed in the tag bucket.

Tag Sorter

There are two Tag Sorting shifts on Saturday:

9:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. (6:45 a.m. pre-sale)

12:30 p.m. - 3:30 p.m. (6:45 a.m. pre-sale)

Tag Sorters work to ensure that all consignors are paid correctly for their sold items. Tag Sorting is the process of consolidating all the tags for each consignor. Individuals will be sorting, counting and entering the tags into the consignor database. Consignors will be paid for the items that they sell only if tags are sorted and calculated correctly! For that reason, a system has been developed that can move quickly, but also has enough double-checks built in so that no errors slip by. Tag sorting is also a very focused job and volunteers need to get as much done as possible during each shift so that our post-sale process can get underway as soon as possible.

This position is a good choice for individuals who are pregnant or for other reasons would like to be fairly stationary during the shift. We are supportive of moms who need to bring a newborn or infant (up to 6 months only) along to this shift. In fairness to others serving their three hour shift, if your child becomes too much of a distraction, taking you away from your shift responsibilities, you may be asked to fulfill your three hour commitment by helping with tag tallying or data entry following the sale. The Tag Sorter Coordinator will demonstrate exactly what to do when you arrive for your shift.

Tag Tally

This shift is served either the Monday or Tuesday evening following the sale. Volunteers will be counting individual consignor tags to determine the value of items sold. This shift will be held in Ashburn. The Tag Tally Shift Leader will demonstrate exactly what to do when you arrive for your shift.

This shift shops the pre-sale Saturday at 7:00 a.m.
